Prompton
State Park
The
Best Kept Secret of the Poconos! |
|
|
Nestled in the woods just 4.5 miles west
of the historic town of Honesdale, PA lays
one of the best kept secrets in the State
Park system. Prompton State Park is a full
featured, multi use, recreational area geared
for men, women and children of any generation.
The park spans over 2,000 acres and has
a 30+ mile trail system. The park
also features a beautiful lake that is 2.5
miles long and covers almost 300 acres.
|
| |
Let’s begin with the scenic beauty of
the park. Prompton State Park offers quiet
and pristine woodlands paired with vast open
grassy knolls ideal for a quick pick up game
of ball. Or, if you are in the mood for a
stroll – take a hike back through the
woods and discover some of natures’
best sights. Abundant wildlife, meandering
streams and water falls abound all through
the trail system. All trails are clearly marked
and distances given to all destinations. If
you tire, there are many places to rest including
several strategically placed benches and picnic
tables. These trails are also perfect areas
to try out the snow shoes when the first flakes
start to fly. Snowshoeing is one of the fastest
growing sports in the nation and one of the
easiest to learn. But, if you are an “old
school” fan of cross county skiing,
there are just as many opportunities to indulge
in this great recreational winter sport.
|
| |
Water sports are also highly encouraged. Take
a kayak out into the center of the lake and
spend your afternoon exploring the shore line
of this great man made lake. Or, take a canoe
out and try some fishing from the center of
the lake. If you are not into the boat scene,
take your fly rod and cast out from almost
any point on the shoreline.
|
| |
Now, if you are on the more adventurous side
of life Prompton has much more to offer. Prompton
State Park currently boasts 30+ miles of some
of the best single track mountain biking in
the east. Take your biking skills for a test
ride through boulder fields, numerous streams,
varied elevation changes and great downhill
turns. This is definitely the way mountain
biking was meant to be!
Nestled back in the
woods are also several opportunities for bouldering
and climbing if that’s more of what
you are into. The glaciers of the last ice
age left the park area with several rocky
outcrops and ledges perfect for some entry
level climbs. Make sure to bring your equipment
and spend a summer afternoon rappelling or
climbing.
|
| |
Finally, if after emerging from the woods
you find there is still plenty of daylight
left make sure that you pick up a few discs
and try your hand at the 18 hole disc golf
course that is featured at the main entrance
to the park. Designed by serious golfers,
this course is challenging and fun! The course
also hosts several tournaments each year that
attract hundreds of golfers and spectators.
If you are the competitive type, make sure
you get the dates for these events.
Tournament dates may be found at
www.promptondiscgolf.com or
www.nesportsltd.com and click on Events.
Prompton State Park

you are a serious mountain biker with a high
end mountain bike or just a passing visitor
from one of the major metro areas, with nothing
but hiking boots and a picnic basket make
certain that you check out the park. Directions
are easy, and the park is within 2 hours of
the major metro areas. If a trip to the Poconos
is in your future be sure to check out Prompton
State Park.
